Service Description

Psychological assessments are structured and comprehensive evaluations designed to understand cognitive abilities, emotional functioning, behavioural patterns, and overall psychological wellbeing. These evidence-based tools support the identification of mental health conditions, learning difficulties, and developmental differences, helping guide appropriate support and intervention. The assessment provides a clear understanding of behaviours of concern, including their presentation, frequency, triggers, associated risks, and overall complexity. It also considers the individual’s strengths, communication, environment, and support needs to ensure a comprehensive and person-centred overview. The process is typically completed over approximately 20 hours, depending on the complexity of the participant’s needs and the availability of information. It involves a combination of clinical interviews with the participant, family, and support team, review of existing reports, and direct observation where appropriate. Structured assessment tools may be used where relevant, including Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) frameworks, risk assessments, quality of life measures (e.g., AQoL), functional and disability measures (e.g., WHODAS 2.0), and behavioural screening tools (e.g., FAST, MAS). The outcome is a detailed report that outlines the level of support required and provides the clinical evidence needed to support funding for a Behaviour Support Plan under the NDIS. This assessment is particularly relevant when behaviours have emerged or escalated, when funding does not reflect current needs, or when restrictive practices are in place and require formal review.
